How to Compare Medicare Supplement Companies

Once you know which plan letter you want, the remaining decision is entirely about the company selling it — because the coverage won’t change, but everything else about your experience will.

Price, and how it’s structured

Don’t just compare this year’s premium. Ask how the company prices the policy — community-rated, issue-age-rated, or attained-age-rated — since that determines how your premium behaves over the next ten or twenty years, not just this one.

Financial strength ratings

Independent agencies like AM Best, Moody’s, and S&P rate insurance companies on their ability to pay future claims. You’re buying a policy you may hold for decades — a company’s current friendliness matters less than its ability to still be solvent and paying claims twenty years from now.

Rate increase history

Every Medigap insurer raises rates over time. Some do it in small, predictable steps. Others have a track record of large, irregular jumps. This history is public information in most states through your state insurance department, and it’s one of the most underused pieces of information people skip when comparing companies.

Customer service reputation

Complaint ratios — how many complaints a company gets relative to its size — are tracked by state insurance departments and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. A company with a policy that reads identically to a competitor’s can still be a meaningfully worse experience if getting a claim question answered takes six phone calls.

Household discounts

Many insurers offer a discount — often 5 to 12 percent — if you and a spouse or another adult in your household both enroll in a policy with them, even if you’re on separate policies. This is easy to miss if you’re shopping alone and worth asking about directly.

Putting it together

Because the benefits are identical across companies for a given plan letter, the comparison is really a comparison of price stability, financial durability, and service quality — not coverage. Get quotes from more than one carrier before deciding, and weigh this year’s premium against the company’s actual track record, not just today’s number.
